Mount Vesuvius, a volcano located in Campania just a little east of Naples and a short distance from the shore, has erupted many times. In AD79 it destroyed the Roman cities of Pompeii, Herculaneum, Oplontis and Stabiae, and other settlements, and killed more than 1,000 people. Vesuvius is regarded today as one of the most dangerous volcanoes on Earth as 3,000,000 people live near enough to be affected by an eruption, with 600,000 in the danger zone. Its ominous strength inspired the name of this range.
